Say "GOOD-BYE" to overwhelm

A brief overview of the Executive Function Skills assessed:

Metacognition

Which is much more than thinking about your thinking.  It's indicative of how you see your world and how much of it you actually see accurately. It's a foundational core EF skill.

Inhibiting

Is about the pause, which most of us don't do before we take an action.  It ties in with Metacognition.

Shifting

Is something we do all day long; making transitions from one thing to another (or the flip side of shifting too often, and with good reason).

Emotion  Control

Is more than most think of it as.  It's our thoughts that create our feelings and emotions by the meanings we give to our life events.  You are the meaning maker in your life!

Self-Monitoring

Is a relationship skill and important in both work and personal life.  It's important to develop the ability to see yourself through your own eyes (without biases) as well as through the eyes of others, and from a neutral observer position in order to know what needs changing.

Initiating

In its simplest form is about getting started; but goes much deeper than that.  No one talks about the prep work that is needed in order to get started successfully and continue until the task or project is complete.

Working Memory

Is about integration of information and is the one EF skill that seems to be hit the hardest for us.  It's responsible, in part, for the feelings of overwhelm that so many experience due to information not being integrated but rather coming at you like a fire hose.

Plan & Organize Thoughts

Is typically a weak area for many.  It's very challenging to do so if you don't have a strong foundation built before you tackle this EF skill.  Your thoughts can feel like traffic at rush hour and create a feeling of overwhelm.

Task- Monitoring

Is a fun EF skill.  It's like what pilots do - they monitor the dials in the cockpit and make course corrections throughout the flights rather than waiting until they arrive at some destination that isn't where they were to arrive or crash and burn.  Same is true for what we do in daily life.

Organization of Materials

this included what's on your computer, phone, laptop, iPad; all the papers laying around that have no homes; and the clutter that is continuously created by habits that don't support follow through and minimal stress in life.

Conscious Focusing

This isn't assessed but was added by me due to its importance; we need to be able to focus when and where we need to focus.

Scheduling & Prioritizing

This isn't assessed but was added by me due to its importance; so many have never learned how to prioritize information or tasks nor schedule them and follow through on those commitments.

Maintaining Achievements

This isn't assessed but was added by me due to its importance; what's the point of learning, developing and internalizing all of the above if you won't be able to keep it forever in your life?  The point of GSD is for you to transform yourself from the inside out and no longer be the person who enters GSD.  You will learn to travel light and keep the best of you and release the rest.
