How to Win with ADHD

adhd all blogs Aug 19, 2022

Have you spent years wishing you could win at being an adult with ADHD?

Perhaps you’re like my student, Mario:

"I spent 50 years wondering what was wrong with me? Why I’m not like my other friends; am I broken?”

Life as an adult with ADHD, or undiagnosed ADHD, is fraught with self-doubt, anxiety and overwhelm. The adult ADHD mind functions on overdrive with a swirl of loud, brilliant ideas rapidly darting from thing to thing to thing. Or maybe, it’s the hyper-focused brain that fixates on that one thing and hours pass by unnoticed.

And then when the day’s finished, it’s difficult to identify what was accomplished.  And then, the negative thinking is triggered and the mental cycle repeats all over again.

Is there a way to win with ADHD?

Yes! You can win at being an adult with ADHD. Like you, I am a professional with ADHD who was finally diagnosed in my 50’s. I had asked for help from many mental health professionals–most of whom were ill-equipped to address my ADHD symptoms, nor help me with the development of the skills I lacked for my adult life.

As a result of not getting what I needed, I’ve spent a lot of time, effort and energy looking for solutions to my own struggles. I’ve tried quick-fixes, medication, therapy and typical coaching, only to discover that they are only band-aids. Some were very expensive band-aids, not only costing me financially, but also physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

You may wonder how my story fits with yours. Well, after years of putting my own ADHD experience and knowledge to work for me, I’ve developed ADDventures In Achievement, a transformational program designed to help you succeed as an adult with ADHD.

Transformation is a journey!

The ADDventures In Achievement Foundational Skills Program is like no other. It takes you as you are right now and moves you towards your best self and best life yet. I don’t mean to sound cliche. Transformation is just like that.

Here is Mario’s full quote:

"I spent 50 years wondering what was wrong with me? Why I’m not like my other friends; am I broken? In one year working with Dr B, I’ve been able to change the things in my life that used to keep me from succeeding. Now my life after 60 will be so much better than it was before 60."

With the scaffolding support and strategies for developing his core life skills, the ability to release his limiting beliefs, and by embracing a positive sense of self or identity, Mario was able to learn about his brain and to retrain his brain to move towards a more successful life. His life and sense of self has been transformed.

A Proven Program for Success as an Adult with ADHD

ADDventures In Achievement is a 7-month program that includes three dynamic components: the Assessment Process, Curriculum and Coaching, and Community Engagement and Support. Like a 3-legged stool, each piece is vital for rewiring your brain for good when you have ADHD. (Note: Even if you don’t have ADHD or have never been diagnosed, this program could be the very thing that can change your life. It’s based on the development of your Executive Function Skills.)

Understanding the Assessment Process

Your ADDventures In Achievement journey begins shortly after you enroll, with an assessment (an evaluation questionnaire) of your Executive Function skills.

You’ll also have the opportunity to submit your “Getting to Know Me” information related to your current life circumstances and where you think you need the most help.

After reviewing your EF assessment and your “Getting to Know Me” information, you’ll receive a personalized video recording where I explain your EF results and how the program will help you develop the EF skills needed for your success.

This process establishes a clear starting point for your journey through the program.

Understanding the Curriculum and Coaching Process

Once you know where you’re starting, it’s time to set you up for success so you can work towards your goals and perform at an optimal level.  I’m a firm believer that change happens when you change your mind, so week one always begins with a live group mini training to identify your limiting beliefs and your outdated identity. It’s important to identify and let go of anything that may be holding you back.

"In just a matter of one 1:1 session and two workshops with Dr B, I feel like I am starting to be myself again. I still have a long way to go related to dealing with my ADHD, but I know that I'm on the right path as long as I stick with ADDventures In Achievement.

Just weeks before I signed up, I was feeling depressed and very frustrated with myself in how I'm handling even the minor tasks and responsibilities I have both at home and at work. Dr B enlightened me about many things that I really needed to hear and made such a difference already. She doesn't just listen, she gives solutions! and solutions that are effective and make sense!" - F.P.

Once you're aware of and release the beliefs that keep you stuck, a firm foundation needs to be set for growth. So, during weeks two through four, you’ll develop the key three pre-skills for transformation: time management, overcoming procrastination, and easy steps for quality decision-making more easily. Each of these MasterClasses are offered one week at a time.

You’ll have three weeks of immersive training plus group coaching calls to support you during each of these three MasterClasses before transitioning into the second phase of the program where every two weeks you’ll be introduced to a new EF skill.

You’ll learn about each of the 13 EF skills in depth and practice each one in your daily lifework using fun strategies. I believe in lots of experimenting and practicing discovering what works best for you.

Group coaching calls continue every two weeks during the development of the 13 EF skills segment of the program. Each of the steps in the AIA framework builds upon each other and is interwoven throughout the program to activate transformation in your life.

AIA-FS helps you understand the unique ways your brain works and gives you the systems, steps, and strategies to strengthen each Executive Function Skill, one by one.

Just having a game plan isn’t enough to effect real change. The Executive Function training and live group coaching are essential to implementing, learning, and adjusting as you work to create new habits, strengthen your skills and improve your quality of life. Through group coaching, you’ll get real-time hours directly with me to work through your struggles and move towards your goals.

"Working with Dr B has been helpful, encouraging and has inspired real change in my life. Because of steps she encouraged me to take, there are several tangible achievements she helped me accomplish: following up on a job opening and getting hired on the spot, changing my perspective on tasks I dreaded to instead addressing them promptly and with ease, and learning to be a kind encourager to myself, treating myself with care." -R.O.

The Importance of Community Engagement and Support

Life transformation never happens when we try to do the work all by ourselves. And when you join this program, you’ll never do this work alone. Inside AIA-FS you’ll find a private, student-only forum where you can receive additional coaching and support from others and from me.

So whether you’re facing challenges, frustrations, asking questions, sharing wins, or showing support for others in the community, I will be there with you every step of the way.

You’ll have 24/7 access to a safe, non-judgmental community of peers to cry, laugh, and celebrate with as you walk through the journey together.

"Where do I begin to tell you, the person looking into helping yourself, how wonderful this ADDventures program can be for your sanity and growth?

Being scattered, a common trait for people like you and me, is explained, nurtured, talked about. Solutions are offered. You learn at your own pace and with whatever explanations that you might need. For me, it was learning to pause and think before I made a decision and very often the decision would be different after having paused.

The community of people that surround you and, with Dr B to guide you, is a WIN/WIN situation. Any and all of your emotions are welcomed at any time they show up. This is a safe place to grow and feel loved." - S.W.

I’ve been thrilled to walk alongside my students as they move from achievement to achievement in their lives. It brings me great joy to see them leaving their lifelong prison behind and moving forward into a newfound freedom. Your growth and transformation are what I’m all about.

“The essential pieces of my ADD/EFD self-care stack: Medication, proper nutrition, exercise, good sleep, and Dr. B’s program. When I get sufficient amounts of all of it, I’m unstoppable.

With her help, I’m gradually rewiring my brain to align my actions with my intentions and to work with me, rather than against me. Her advice is helping me to experience life in a more positive, confident, and productive way. Dr. B’s motto could be “been there, solved that,” because she has lived so many similar issues to the ones we in the group have experienced, and she’s found a way to deal with them that others can apply to their own lives.

Of all the many mental health care pros I’ve worked with, she’s the first to understand my executive functioning issues first-hand. She’s a true unicorn of the mental healthcare world!" - Shelby
