If you’re like many of the adults with ADHD that I’ve known and worked with over the past 30 years, you have challenges completing tasks. In order to complete a task, you need to know what the completed task is. There needs to be criteria or something that tells you that you have finished it.
Now, it’s important to note that task completion doesn’t look the same to everyone. What I say is the completed task of doing the laundry might not be what you say is the completed task of doing the laundry. Who’s right? We both are. In other words, task completion can be a very individual thing. The fine line or challenge here is making sure that there is agreement on what the completed task means, if more people are involved than just you.
So, what is truly “task completion?” Well, you could say that there’s “my task completion”, “your task completion” and “our task completion.” In other words, I might have my standard, you might have yours and we might have to negotiate a standard that will be “our standard” when it affects both of us.
When I think of my task completion from years ago, it was definitely different than it is now; meaning I lived in a cluttered and disorganized space with no systems or methods for the chaotic life I lived. I hadn’t yet established “homes” for things, my things didn’t have “curfews” yet, and I hadn’t clearly defined what the criteria for a completed task would be for me to feel good about how I was living my life and maintaining my environments. There were many considerations, first being whether I was a high or low maintenance person, whether I wanted a high or low maintenance life, and whether I wanted a high or low maintenance environment. Answering these questions for myself was the first step because until I knew this information, I couldn’t decide on what my criteria would be for myself, my life and my environment.
In this episode, I’m going to be taking a look at WHY not completing tasks can be so damaging to your mindset and quality of life, and what you can do about it. AND – Knowing is only the first step; the next step is taking action on what you know to start getting new results, fine tune your process as you go along, and get better and better results. It is a process, so please don’t let yourself off the hook here with taking action once, not getting the results you hoped for, and stopping there. Seriously!! Did you learn to walk or tie your shoes with just one attempt? I know I didn’t, so keep going!! You’re learning to do, not just standing up and doing like you’ve known how all your life. Get real here!!
